Badass Babes: Kylie and Jenna of Botanik

This week we sat down with two badass best friends who started Botanik - an all natural body care line.  Inspired by their entrepreneurial experience in start ups and consumer packaged goods, Jenna and Kylie started Botanik by formulating deodorant in their kitchen.

Now they're hustling in the body care game after hours and climbing mountains together on weekends.  Keep reading to learn more about these badass babes and check out Botanik here

RR: What past jobs most effected how you run your business?

J: When I first graduated college I had 2 job offers and was immediately faced with a big decision: work at a big fancy HQ downtown, or work for a small start up company nobody had ever heard of. Working for a small start up company was one of the best decisions I made. The wide range of responsibilities and situations I’ve navigated myself through early on in my career have taught me a lot on what it takes to start my own business and make it work.

RR: I wish my past self knew...

J: that it is ok to fail!

RR:Advice for young or new individuals pursuing this line of work?

J: Be in tune with yourself and know your strengths and what value you can bring to your business, while also acknowledging your weaknesses. Don’t be afraid to hire a consultant or advisor in areas that aren’t your forte.

RR: Why did you decide to start your business?

K: I started listening to NPR’s “How I Built This” podcast a couple months before Botanik was born and was immediately inspired to start a business or service. The two stories that really struck a chord with me were Patagonia with Yvon Chouinard and Clif Bar with Gary Erickson. Luckily, my close friend (and neighbor at the time), Jenna, felt the same sense of inspiration and motivation to start a business. Being active, outdoor enthusiasts with a passion for natural products and brand building, we saw an opportunity to bring natural body care products to our fellow adventure loving outdoor folk – so we jumped on it! Our brand is really for everyone and we are truly on a mission to inspire a connection with nature through our products.

RR: What brands/influencers influence your style?

K: REI, Patagonia, Dr. Bronners and Teva, to name a few.

RR: 90’s song that gets you hype?

K:  Fantasy by Mariah Carey

RR: I feel most comfortable giving advice on work-life balance. I am no stranger to hard work and long hours, but I firmly believe true success (and happiness) come when you find that balance. I love to work, but I also love my family, friends and hobbies. The relationships in my life will always come first.

RR: Advice for young or new individuals pursuing this line of work?

K: GO FOR IT! The first steps to starting a business are basically like a foreign language. It’s daunting, but it’s doable! Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help/advice. You’d be surprised how many people out there are willing to give advice and offer mentorship.
